Woman Fined $500 For Keeping Free Airplane Snack

A Colorado woman was fined $500 by a US Customs and Border Protection agent after she decided to save a bag of apples that were handed out during her flight from Paris, France. Crystal Tadlock said that flight attendants handed out the apples near the end of the flight. She was not hungry at the time so she put the snack into her carry-on so she could eat it during the second leg of her trip.

According to Fox 31 in Denver, Tadlock's bag was randomly selected to be searched by Customs when she entered the United States. The Customs agent found the apples, which were still in the bag with the Delta Airlines logo and told her she was going to be fined $500.

He had asked me if my trip to France was expensive and I said, 'Yeah.' I didn’t really get why he was asking that question, and then he said 'It’s about to get a lot more expensive after I charge you $500,'" Tadlock said.

She tried to explain that the fruit was handed out on the plane and offered to throw it away. The agent did not budge and wrote her the ticket for bringing undeclared fruit into the United States.

Tadlock said she plans to fight the ticket in court. She believes that Delta should alert customers that they cannot take in-flight snacks off the flight.

"It’s really unfortunate someone has to go through that and be treated like a criminal over a piece of fruit," Tadlock said.
