Pink Eye May Be A Coronavirus Symptom

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) issued an advisory to eye doctors around the country that, in rare cases, pink eye could be a symptom of COVID-19. The AAO cited a study published in the Journal of Medical Virology, which found that researchers discovered traces of the coronavirus in the tears of a COVID-19 patient who also had conjunctivitis.

While the results of the study have not been confirmed by the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the AAO told eye doctors that they should use extra precautions when treating patients for pink eye, especially if they have a fever or shortness of breath.

They told doctors they need to cover their eyes, nose, and mouth, and disinfect their office and equipment after treating a patient with pink eye.
