Governor Questions Constitutionality Of Flag Commission Appointments

Gov. Reeves says it was unconstitutional for legislative leaders to appoint six of the State Flag Commission members. He says there's been a power grab at the Capitol this year-- and says Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann and House Speaker Philip Gunn overstepped their authority in naming a majority of the commission's membership because those are executive branch positions. The nine-member group met today for the first time without Reeves' appointees in attendance. The governor says he's been too busy dealing with coronavirus to finalize his three appointments. But the commission appears ready to move ahead with its work in choosing a new state flag design without Reeves' input.
