Mysterious Seed Packages Showing Up In MS

Some mysterious seed packages from China are beginning to show up in Mississippi. Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson says his office has gotten calls from people in at least 15 counties who received those unsolicited packages. Gipson says his plant inspectors are going around picking up the seeds,which-- in some cases-- appear to be watermelon or gourd seeds. He says there's no indication that the seeds pose any health risk but they could contain a fungus or pest that could harm agriculture-- and seeds from invasive species could be mixed in. For those reasons, Gipson is urging people who receive the seeds not to throw them away or plant them but to notify his office instead. It's believed that the packages are being sent as part of a consumer scam aimed at generating phony reviews for an online seller.
