Hazard Pay For Seattle Grocery Store Workers Returns After City Approval

Some grocery store workers in Seattle will be seeing extra money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Seattle City Council voted unanimously to approve legislation reinstating hazard pay Monday (January 26), according to KING 5. Employees will get an extra $4 an hour "compensate grocery employees for the risks of working on the frontlines of a global pandemic."

"It will also have provisions to limit how employers give the hazard pay – including not reducing base pay and ensuring it comes with an employee's regular paycheck -- and not all at once," reporters said.

The ordinance applies to grocery businesses with 500-plus employees worldwide and for Seattle employees covered by the city’s minimum wage. Convenience stores and food marts selling a limited line of goods are not affected.

“We should not treat them as sacrificial and we should compensate them for the hazard they are in,” Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda said.

The hazard pay will last as long as the pandemic, but the council may reconsider the legislation at the four-month mark, according to a release from the council. Reporters said this corresponds with the state department of health's COVID vaccination plan, where grocery workers of all ages may be eligible for the vaccine by April.
